Michigan Judge Allows Portions Of Right To Work Suit To Go ForwardAbigail Rubenstein of Law360 ($$) writes that yesterday, a federal judge sitting in Michigan issued a mixed ruling in a suit brought by several labor unions challenging Michigan’s "right to work" law.  U.S. District Judge Stephen J. Murphy III dismissed two of plaintiffs’ theories, but allowed the plaintiffs to move forward with their assertion that sections of Michigan’s "right to work" law were preempted by the National Labor Relations Board’s jurisdiction.

In particular, Judge Murphy held that the unions could move forward with their claim that sections of the law relating to concerted and protected activity were under the Board’s purview.  The Judge further provided that whether several of the law’s provisions could stand would depend on whether any parts of the law that were preempted could be severed.

NU Organizer To Meet With IL RepresentativeAlejandra Cancino of the Chicago Tribune reports that ex Northwestern QB Kain Colter is expected to meet with U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) this Wednesday.  The meeting comes on the back of Colter and the Northwestern football team winning approval from a National Labor Relations Board regional director to hold a union election.  Schakowsky has stated publicly that she agrees with the regional director’s ruling, and further believes it would be "too bad" if universities moved to craft legislation exempting themselves from the National Labor Relations Act. 

SEPTA Negotiations ContinueNBC Philadelphia reports that negotiations between SEPTA and management officials continued yesterday in the hope of avoiding a possible labor strike.  The Transit Workers Union, the representative of SEPTA’s employees, held talks with SEPTA officials for approximately six hours over the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement.  With the prior contract expiring earlier this month, workers could potentially walk off the job for the first time in five years.  We will keep you posted as negotiations continue.
