Retirees Ask Judge To Approve NFL Concussion Settlement: Greg Ryan of Law360 ($$) writes that a group of retired NFL players who have sued the League over issues related to concussions have asked a federal judge in Pennsylvania to preliminarily approve a $760 million settlement. Under the terms of the proposed deal, the NFL will also be on the hook for over $100 million in attorney’s fees. The deal, which will affect approximately 20,000 class members, is seen as a boon for the retirees.
“We have received overwhelming support as retired players and their families learn more about the benefits that are provided in this settlement," plaintiffs counsel Christopher Seeger of Seeger Weiss LLP and Sol Weiss of Anapol Schwartz said in a statement. "We look forward to finalizing this agreement so they can soon take advantage of the programs that are included in this agreement."
Surprisingly, the attorney’s fee provision is in addition to the $760 million settlement. At this point, the League has agreed not to object. We will keep you posted as to the judge’s ruling.
Portland Teachers Mull Strike: Nicole Dunga of the Oregonian writes that a labor dispute between Portland-area teachers and administrators looks set to reach a tipping point. Teachers have stated that while they do not want to strike, they also are sick of the uncertainty that has been brought about by a recent contract dispute. Apparently, administrators are attempting to delete a provision from a previous collective bargaining agreement that limits the amount of hours a teacher can work during the week. Both sides have agreed to mediation in an attempt to stave off a work stoppage. We will keep you posted as this dispute unfolds.
ATU Ratifies BART Deal: Lisa Vorderbrueggen of the Contra Costa Times writes that members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) employed by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Authority have voted to ratify a four-year labor contract after months of stop-start negotiations that included two labor strikes. Approximately 73% of voting ATU members supported the contract. At this point, only members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) still need to ratify the deal, which they are expected to do in a vote on Monday. We will keep you posted.
